FULL BLOG!!!

For some reason, blogger has decided to not let me post any more images to this blog as I seem to have no free space left.

So here is the link to the second half where it should continue from the last post in each brief:

Brief 3 - Rogerthorpe Manor

Here is the new publication brief that I have changed from the original ISTD brief. I knew what I wanted the subject to be about when I looked over my photography collection. I have 2 up coming weddings next year that I will be the photographer for, and I have already done one wedding to provide the photographs for this brief. Because they are all coincidentally at the same location, I thought it would be a good idea to create promotional materials and publications for Rogerthorpe Manor as well as incorporating my photography and designing layout and interesting formats for print, which is what this brief was originally driven by.

Change to brief

In my tutorial it was clear that as much as I wanted to produce a publication and work on spread layouts, I wasn't happy with the topic of the content for this brief. I have researched interesting folds, formats and printed materials for this and will continue to do so in more depth but I want to change the subject to being something I am more passionate about. I based the brief originally on the ISTD competition brief, Not Just Fleurons, but plants is a tricky subject if I am not really interested in it, so I am going to revert back to my original idea sheets where I listed themes and general topics that really interest me. Photography is a great interest of mine so I want to play on this and create a promotional lookbook or publication of some sort. I want this to be a fairly quick brief, so I aim to collect the content as soon as possible.

Tutorial feedback

Mark Studio

Wigan Little Theatre wanted a new look and Mark Studio took their name literally by producing mini stationery and this little fact file below. This could be such a quirky idea, to play with scale for my botanical publication or perhaps textures, or an interesting format that matches the facts and photographs of the tropical plants.

The Chase

Another way to incorporate large photography and text on a spread and make them work together for more interesting viewing, by The Chase.

Stand II

I want to use the combination of photography and type for the publication and this spread for FM Developments Ltd shows my favourite way of doing this, with a large double spread background image with bold type layered on top.

Below is another way, using a long, thin format, of adding text over an image in a slightly more illustrative way to tie in with the subject of the booklet - in this case Sandstorm's retail brochure.

Simple fold out elements in a simple stapled booklet adds value and interest for this Event Scotland publication.

And here, the fold out has been taken portrait with an instructional and easy to follow layout as it opens. I really like this idea that Stand has designed for Enkelt and their promotional literature as it is instantly interesting to the eye.

For the Carnyx group below, Stand demonstrates how using shapes and space on a page, factual and informative text can be separated and enhanced for the reader to take notice and read it.

B&W Studio

B&W Studio focus on grabbing reader's attention with bold lettering and various printed reports and promotional publications that use interesting folds and formats. Here is a little collection of spreads and publications that are all relevant to the printed layouts, folds and binding that I am interested in creating.

GFSmith

Looking at things from a simple format point of view for my informative plant publication, this first GFSmith promotional folder and booklet insert could be a more intriguing and interesting way of displaying the information with a photographic background that you can always see.

GFSmith - Master Product Swatch publication
As well as the right stock, which is obviously what GFSmith are promoting, the idea of a simple ring binder and a full page image that lifts up to reveal facts underneath is another way of adding a little extra something to an ordinary booklet.

Purpose

View Magazine for English Farming and Food Partnerships by Purpose. These large black and white type layouts and clever use of space on the spreads are what draws me to this publication and I think it makes the subject a lot more approachable and the reader hold interest for longer.

This is ideally how I want to approach the plant publication, with interesting quirks like these extra fold out pieces below.

Their EFFP conference mailer is made up of really nice layout combinations too.
